With basketball season, comes the need for additional funds that the basketball team needs to raise for uniforms, trips, equipment and more. There are some great, easy ways for your basketball team to raise money for the season.

Your basketball team can do a coffee and candy fundraiser. Because money is tight for everyone, it is great to be able to offer something people can enjoy that is cheap and tasty at the game. Coffee is incredibly affordable and can be sold for a profit during your season games. All you need to do is have parents, the basketball cheerleaders, siblings, team helpers or members of the team who might be injured set up a booth and sell refreshments during the game.

To make it really easy, buying candy at a big box store, and adding water bottles or soda to the list too is a great way to go. But, because it can be chilly during the basketball season, having hot coffee for sale is a great way to boost sales.

Car Wash Fundraiser Lay Out and Work Flow Strategies

When setting up a car wash fundraiser is very important to keep the workflow moving. If you have sold a lot of presale tickets or if your car wash fundraiser is on a busy corner in the city then you will no doubt have many cars lined up waiting to be washed.

If the line gets too long been people will simply not get in line and you will lose that business forever. However if the line is constantly moving people will get in line and you wash more vehicles, and thus make more money.

For car wash fundraiser lay out strategies it makes sense to set up cones so you can have two lanes of cars to wash at the same time. The cones should be equally spaced out with two parallel lines.

Hopefully the lines will not get any longer than five cars in each. After this waiting area there should be a space. The cars will move up to the wash area where they will be wet down, soaped and rinsed, then the car should move forward to the drying area.

It is paramount that the lines do not go out into the street otherwise this will cause a traffic jam and attract the attention of a local police officer or code enforcement if one happens to be working on a Saturday.

For example, high levels of male hormones or “androgens” may be part of the reason why some men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than others. It is possible, according to some researchers, that men with high levels of a hormone called IGF-1 can be more likely to get prostate cancer than others.

For decades, coffee has been the subject of research focused specifically on whether coffee is more healthful than harmful.

Dark roasted coffee is more popular than ever, and the odds are that you may have enjoyed a dark roasted cup of Joe a time or two in your lifetime. However, as a coffee lover, it is important to understand the difference between dark and light roasted coffee because they are two diverse coffee styles.

How to Remove Coffee Stains From a Stainless Steel Thermos

Do you find yourself sometimes staring into the stainless steel thermos you take to work or use to carry coffee around and wonder how to get it really, really clean so the pesky dirt inside does not damage the taste of your beverage?

Well, you are not alone in this and the following cleaning suggestions may help you keep that thermos spotless and ready for more great tasting gourmet coffee.

1. Use the gentlest cleanser possible instead of harsh and abrasive products that can really tarnish your thermos and even change the flavor of your coffee.

  • Start with a gentle all-purpose cleanser or soap first. Use only abrasive pads made out of plastic so you do not scrape the inside of the container. If you must, brush lightly.

2. Clean your thermos containers after every use. This is going to make keeping a clean thermos much easier for the long run.

  • Soak the container for a few minutes before cleaning to remove any stubborn stains that you cannot remove with a washcloth.
  • A soft toothbrush is a great and inexpensive cleaning helper to clean certain stains that are otherwise hard to reach.
  • Dip the brush in a little bit of detergent and scrub very gently. Easy does it. That is the best thing to remember.
  • Sometimes, people will use baby’s shampoo because it is so gentle and effective in cleaning. A few drops are all you need.

3. Most smudges come out by using slightly damp paper towers or a soft sponge.

  • For very stubborn stains, soak the thermos container in warm water with detergent or shampoo for a while longer. Then rinse again with water and vinegar.

4. One other cleaning recipe for very stubborn coffee stains is to use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

  • The trick here is to mix about ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Do not over complicate this simple recipe: simply stir and pour into your stained steel thermos.
  • Give a soft shake and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
  • This usually removes the stains from the bottom of the thermos.
  • Rinse very well with hot water.
  • Repeat as necessary.

5. A very easy cleaning method is to fill the stainless steel thermos with baking soda and hot water.

  • Place a teaspoon or two of baking soda into the thermos, slowly pour near boiling hot water until almost full (notice the effervescence), add a teaspoon more of baking soda and close the lid.
  • Leave closed for 30 minutes or more, depending on the degree of staining on the stainless steel surface. Brush gently with a soft dish brush while rinsing until all the “slippery” feel from the baking soda solution is gone from the inside.
  • Dry the thermos and it is ready for the next time to fill with your favorite specialty coffee.

Is it worth cleaning the stainless steel thermos?

  • You bet! Coffee flavors, aromas and tastes should be as pure of any other external influences as possible.
  • For those people who prepare their own coffee and carry it for their personal enjoyment (and cost savings), a clean thermos makes all the difference in a great coffee experience or one that is not as good.

Can Coffee Benefit Women’s Health?

One common fact in life is that with age, you often become more conscious of protecting your health and preventing the development of diseases. If you are a postmenopausal woman with these concerns, you will be happy to know the latest research that drinking 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day will protect your heart.

This 15 year study was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition to show that there were fewer deaths as a result of non-cancerous inflammatory diseases and heart disease among women who were postmenopausal. This group of women consumed 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day. This showed that coffee was responsible for these health benefits, especially since it is the second most consumed beverage worldwide. Coffee is the main source of antioxidants for many Americans within their daily diet, which will help to reduce heart disease and inflammation, as confirmed by Lene Frost Andersen, PhD, who works in the nutrition department at the University of Oslo in Norway.

The results of the study were drawn from 27,312 postmenopausal women participating in this study done by Iowa Women’s Health. The study commenced in 1986, and all of the participants were 55 to 69 years old. They had not yet been diagnosed with any conditions like diabetes, cancer, or heart disease, excluding skin cancer. All of the women completed a 127 question survey about their regular habits, including coffee consumption, alcohol use, and smoking. None of the women changed their coffee drinking habits for the purpose of the study. The groups of women in the study were tracked for 15 years, and in that time, 1733 passed away from cancer, 1411 passed away from heart disease, and the remaining 1211 died from other causes. The women who consumed 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day had less of a risk of dying from heart disease or inflammatory diseases, not including cancer, as opposed to the other women studied.

The women consumed 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day and were less likely to die from heart disease by 24% compared to the women who didn’t drink coffee. The women who drank 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day had a 28% less risk of passing away from non-cancerous inflammation, compared to those who abstained from coffee altogether. Death from cancer was not related to coffee drinking.

These results were not seen for the consumption of other beverages, like tea, sugary drinks, fruit juice, diet soda, and milk. The study did not conclude that drinking coffee was completely responsible for a lowered risk of heart disease, but the results were consistent to confirm that drinking 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day provides protection against inflammatory disease and cardiovascular issues in women who are postmenopausal.

Decaffeinated Coffee – What You Need to Know

People often wonder how they take the caffeine out of coffee.  Though this is a question most have never pondered, recent reports have emerged showing decaffeinated coffee can be bad for your health.  Here are the facts you need to know in order to make an informed decision when you purchase decaf coffee:

Two Different Kinds of Beans

There are two kinds of coffee that are grown:  Arabica and Robusta. Arabica has about twice the amount of caffeine in it as Robusta, and therefore this type of coffee is usually used to make normal, caffeinated coffee, espresso, and most other coffee drinks.  Robusta is usually used to make decaffeinated coffee, since it starts out with a much lower caffeine level to begin with.  The caffeine is then removed from the beans using one of the following methods.

Decaffeination Methods

There are a few different ways that you can separate the caffeine from the coffee beans.  These days, most decaf coffee is produced using a process that removes the caffeine from the coffee beans using a solvent.  The two types of solvents that are used are methylene chloride and ethyl acetate.  The first of these solvents, methylene chloride is on the National Cancer Institute’s list as a possible human carcinogen.  Though the solvents are rinsed from the coffee beans, residues often remain as it is quite difficult to remove all of the substance.  Although the Food and Drug Administration hasn’t declared the use of these solvents unsafe for human consumption, many people are choosing to drink decaf coffee produced using an alternative method.

A second method that is used to produce decaffeinated coffee is called the Swiss Water Process.  Currently, only twenty percent of the world’s decaf coffee is produced this way.  This process does not use any harsh chemical substances, and relies only on the use of hot water to separate the coffee from the beans.  This process takes longer to complete than with other methods, but there is no residue on the beans afterward.  Health experts generally agree that this is the healthiest way to produce decaf coffee.

Although most decaffeinated coffee for sale today uses solvents, decaf produced using the Swiss Water Process is readily available as well.  Since the Swiss Water Process does not involve the use of solvents, it is considered to be of better quality and taste.  Most organic decaf is produced this way, and it is nearly always clearly marked on the label.  Any specialty coffee shop should know which process was used on their decaf beans, and it also readily available for purchase on the internet.
